Social Media For Beginners: Tips and Tricks You Need To Know In 2021

Everyone does it. We do it, your kids do it, your neighbours do it, and Elon Musk does it a LOT. Someone brought it up in conversation the other day and now you’re curious about it too. No, we’re not talking about THAT. We’re also not talking about that other thing. Don’t be silly. We’re talking about social media. You want to get started with it, so here’s how.

Start At The Beginning

In the beginning, there was nothing. Then Mark Zuckerberg declared, “Let there be Facebook!”, and it was so. But we aren’t in ye olde days of social media anymore. The phenomenon has grown far beyond edgy teens in dark bedrooms and everyone’s favourite blue-haired aunt and her double-digit cat colony. We know it and companies like Facebook definitely know it. That’s why it’s now easier than ever to join social media. It’s as simple as going to Facebook (or Instagram, Twitter, Linkedin, etc) and clicking on Sign Up / Create New Account. That’s it. Rinse and repeat for each of the major social media networks.

“The longest part of the journey is said to be the passing of the gate” – some pretentious ancient Roman scholar (Marcus Terentius Varro if you’re really interested).

Setting Up Your Profile

Whether your brand-spanking new social media profile is for yourself or your business, make sure it looks the part. Choose a profile picture that best represents your brand and provide as much info as you can. Some social media sites will hold your hand through the process, so don’t skip any of it! You don’t have to complete every field, but the following three sections are most important: About (a short description of your company), Contact Info (try to include a contact number, email address, and fax number if you’re old-school), and your website’s URL (www.blackandyellow.co.za for example). If people leave your page, it’s best to gently direct them to your website or your contact details to keep the journey flowing.

Is that it?

In a word, yes. You don’t want to overdo it. If you’re googling “How to start a Facebook Business account”, you’re ready for the next big step, which is campaigning on social media and attracting people to your page. It’s not nearly as complicated as it sounds, but you won’t have to worry about any of it with BANG POW at the helm.

We are social media experts who can do anything social media-related you can think of, from helping you set up your accounts to running them and engaging with your community. Think of us as the social media version of MacGyver.
